### March 29 On March 29th, 1790 I signed off on legislation that created the Bank of the United States. It was a revolutionary and ultimately successful endeavor but in the beginning it got a lot of opposition in Congress. I remember one time when I made an impassioned four-hour speech defending it and afterwards James Madison, one of my biggest critics, said to me, “Well Hamilton, if you had been making a novel instead of a speech, you’d have taken all day!” It still brings a smile to my face when I think about it.
